Closing Arguments Done in Saunders Murder Trial

Defense attorney Steven Cornwell began his closing argument telling jurors that this case is about the facts and the fact is, there is no physical evidence linking Nigel Saunders to this crime.

Cornwell points out that there is not a single trace of DNA evidence that put Saunders at the scene of the crime and that Saunders had no motive to harm Jordan Dordell.

According to the defense the identification of Saunders during the attack by Dordell's fiance could not have been accurate due to the amount of stress she was under at the time.

During closing arguments Cornwell also criticized what he describes as the state's failure to explore other potential suspects, such as James Deskins... who dropped Saunders and Talamantez off on Mygatt street the night of the incident... as well as Theresa Pappio who was living with the pair of defendants at 322 Main Street.

During his closing, District Attorney Gerald Mollen said that authorities didn't need to search for additional suspects in the case because they had the man responsible, Nigel Saunders.

Mollen says Dordell's fiance was able to recognize Saunders' voice during the attack because he lived with the couple earlier in the year until Jordan filed a police complaint on Saunders for stealing $7000 from the home.

As for a motive, Mollen reminds jurors of a facebook message between Saunders and Jordan Dordell's sister where Saunders says he's going to mess Jordan up and blames Jordan for his incarceration.

The prosecution says that the stolen property found at the found at the main street apartment is all the physical evidence needed to link Saunders to this crime.

Before closing arguments Judge Martin Smith told the jury it could consider a lesser charge of first-degree manslaughter once it starts deliberations tomorrow morning.
