Despite 20 from Beck, BU falls to Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. – First-place Albany (9-7, 4-0 AE) built a 16-point halftime cushion and kept visiting Binghamton (2-17, 1-3 AE) at bay in a 73-58 win Wednesday night at SEFCU Arena. The game was broadcast on ESPN3 — the fifth time this season BU appeared on the ESPN platform.

Down 34-18 at the break, BU hit 7-of-13 (54%) to start the second half but only briefly pulled to within single digits (48-39 with 11:15 left). The Great Danes quickly restored their double-digit margin, however, hit 5-of-7 three-pointers to start the period and held off the Bearcats, who outscored (40-39) and outrebounded (19-15) their hosts ove the final 20 minutes.

Sophomore guard Marlon Beck II scored a season-high 20 points and freshman forward Bobby Ahearn tied his season-high with 12 points and chipped in seven rebounds and two blocks. Freshman forward Willie Rodriguez added eight points.

Beck netted 17 of his points after intermission and tied his career-high with six three-pointers (6-for-8). He hit 7-of-11 from the floor.

The Great Danes put four players in double figures.

"We battled back and scored 40 points in the second half, which was a positive," head coach Tommy Dempsey said. "They pushed us around in the first half but we stood tall and competed throughout the second half. Albany is a veteran team ... a clutch team and they answered our runs but I saw some good things out there tonight."

Albany used a pair of 17-5 runs to forge ahead in the first half. The Danes opened the game with a 12-point run before BU countered with a modest run. The Bearcats scored six straight to pull within four, 17-13, with 5:49 left in the half. But the Great Danes finished the first half with another 17-5 run to carry a 34-18 cushion into intermission.

The Bearcats hit just seven field goals and Albany shot 50 percent, doubled-up BU on the glass and got to the rim frequently to the tune of 22 points in the paint.

Ahearn hit his first five shots with moves around the basket and short jumpers. Beck drilled back-to-back three-pointers to start the second half and pull BU to within 10, 34-24. But the Great Danes responded with a three of their own to quell the momentum.

Binghamton returns home to host New Hampshire at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
