Norwich Man Accused of Stealing Truck, Crashing While Intoxicated

An odds defying scenario in Sherburne yesterday. A stolen vehicle was recovered after police say the intoxicated driver crashed into another vehicle on Route 12 at a scene police were already responding to.

Chenango County Sheriffs say 38-year-old Jeremy Sawyer was travelling north bound when he crashed into a vehicle travelling southbound, at the same scene that two deputies and NYSDOT were already at, responding to a tractor trailer that was off the road. Sawyer's truck caught fire, and deputies rushed over to free Sawyer by pulling him out of the passenger door to safety.

Around the same time, the 911 center received a call from a Norwich resident saying his truck had been stolen by a family member. Upon investigation deputies determined that Sawyer's vehicle was the same truck that was reported stolen.

Deputies also say that Sawyer was intoxicated when operating the stolen vehicle, and also on parole for a prior DWI conviction. He is facing several felony charges including DWI. Sawyer was arraigned in the Town of Sherburne Court and is being held at the Chenango County Jail on $15,000 cash bail.
