Gaming Facility Location Board Re-Opens Application for Southern Tier Casino License

The Southern Tier is one step closer to gaining a casino.

On Tuesday night members of the State's Gaming Facility Location Board voted unanimously to re-open the application process for a casino in the southern tier.

The board met in Manhattan tonight to discuss the Governor's request to re-open the bid for the Southern Tier after local officials vented their concerns that the true Southern Tier was shut out of the process.

Last month, the board recommended that three locations in New York State be awarded a casino license and not one of them was located in the Southern Tier.

Tioga Downs in Nichols, Traditions Resort and Casino in Union and Lago Resort in Seneca County applied for a license in the region, and the board recommended Lago Resort, a decision the board says it stands behind. The board had the opportunity to recommend four licenses but only awarded three, stating those three had the best chance of being successful. the board says it is willing to opening back up the process, but with high standards.

"What I'm not open minded about is simply recommending the same exact applications we've already passed on. Thus there would have to be modifications to them if they were so inclined to rebid. I think competition is healthy so let's see what else, maybe and who else may want to propose a casino in the region," said Kevin Law, Chairman of Gaming Facility Location Board.

Meanwhile, owners from Traditions say they will not re-apply and will back Tioga Downs' bid. Yesterday Tioga Downs Owner Jeff Gural says he will improve his proposal and announced expansion plans for his facility.

The board said it will not reopen the process for other regions in the state and that it's possible a new license may not be granted for the Southern Tier.
