BCSO Explores Funding Option for Police Body Cameras

The Broome County Sheriff's Office is updating it's efforts to buy 35 body cameras for it's deputies to wear.

The office has selected a camera system and software but estimates the cost to be $50,000, with additional maintenance costs annually. The Sheriff's Office is now trying to find funding sources, whether it be from within their budget or possibly through grants.

"We have picked a hardware and a software platform that we think we are comfortable with that will serve both the community and this office the best. We're currently exploring funding options to move forward with the program," said Broome County Sheriff's Captain Frederick Akshar.

The US Department of Justice has made a number of recommendations regarding police wearing body cameras including officers being required to inform subjects when they are being recorded unless doing so would be unsafe, impractical, or impossible.
