80-Year-Old Man Wins Largest Jackpot in NY History

A retired principal and his wife are now multi-millionaires after winning a $326 million Mega Millions jackpot back in November.

Today, the New York Lottery presented a mega sized ceremonial prize check to 80-year-old Harold Diamond. Diamond says he bought ten sets of quick pick numbers at the Valero on route 302 in Middletown in Sullivan County, while he and his wife were stopping to get food.

The next day he heard that someone had bought the winning ticket at the Valero in Middletown, and rushed home to watch the evening news announce the set of quick pick numbers. He says he was amazed to see those numbers printed on one of his ten tickets.

"And then when I saw the last number I yelled up to my wife and said 'I think we won a few bucks!' and so then we went back and forth and back and forth --you read the numbers, I'll read them forward you read them backwards. And then we were in a daze, a dither," said Harold Diamond, Mega Millions Jackpot Winner.

Diamond is the sole winner of the largest jackpot ever claimed in New York. He opted to take the cash value of the prize, earning him a single lump sum payment of over $197 million.
