BU Women's hoops earn 2nd home victory with 73-62 win over Vermont

VESTAL, N.Y. – Senior forward Sherae Swinson and freshman guard Imani Watkins each finished with a game-high 18 points, leading Binghamton (4-12, 2-1 AE) to a 73-62 win over Vermont (3-12, 0-3 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Events Center. With the victory, the Bearcats have now won three of their last five games.

Swinson, who was 9-for-12 from the floor, also added a team-high 11 rebounds. In the process, she recorded her fourth career double double.

Watkins, meanwhile, added eight rebounds and three assists. She is now averaging a team-best 16.2 points per game this season.

"We are very happy with the win," head coach Linda Cimino said. "I told the team at halftime that this game was going to come down to free throws and layups and we were able to do a good job closing out the game. The crowd today was fantastic and they really helped energize us."

Up 30-27 at the break, the Bearcats opened up a 47-37 lead with 12:23 left in regulation. Swinson led the way with eight of her points during that stretch.

The Catamounts, however, came storming back to tie the game at 49-49 with 8:48 remaining. Kayla Burchill, who finished with 15 points, had five points during that run.

Nursing a 54-53 lead with 5:52 left, Binghamton got some needed breathing room by going on a 7-0 run in a stretch of 2:47 to go up 61-53. Watkins had five of her points during that stretch.

Vermont was within 66-62 with 1:18 left to go but the Bearcats sank seven of their next eight free throws to wrap up the win. Freshman guard Jasmine Sina, who finished with 17 points, hit all four of her attempts during that span.

Junior guard Kim Albrecht scored 14 points for the Bearcats.

Sydney Smith added 15 points for the Catamounts while Kylie Butler finished with a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Bearcats stay at home and will face defending America East champion Albany on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
