Southern Tier Landowners Rally Against Fracking Ban

By Beth Rousseau.
The Cuomo administration banned natural gas drilling based on findings in the SGEIS.

The study sheds light on health concerns associated with fracking.

Less than three weeks after Governor Andrew Cuomo announces a ban on fracking in the state of New York, irate Southern Tier landowners are rallying against his decision.

Dan Fitzsimmons, President of the JLCNY says, "This was a political decision, this wasn't based on science. The science that Zucker did is junk science. It was all about what maybe what might be what could be. It wasn't the actual science of the day."

The economic implication of the ban was a major topic of discussion at Monday night's rally.

New York Landowner Steven Palmatier says, ""It's devastating to the Southern Tier. The economic activity here that this could potentially bring is huge."

Southern Tier landowners say they won't give up the fight until they bring fracking to the area.

Attorney Scott Kurkoski says, "We need to make sure we are heard loud and clear. Everyone here right now is very angry and wants Governor Cuomo to know that we aren't going to stand for this."

President of the Joint Landowners Coalition says they'll have to wait until the impact study is finalized before they decide whether or not they'll take legal action.

Fitzsimmons says, "We'll be working on getting the rights of the people back. This is our right, under the constitution of the United States you have the right to sell your minerals"

Meanwhile, anti-frackers still insist that the economic benefits of fracking aren't worth the potential health hazards.

Isaac Silberman-Gorn of Citizen Action of New York says, "There's no division in the scientific community on fracking.
an overwhelming majority of peer review studies that are coming out every week and every day show irreversible harms of fracking."

Both sides of this heated debate will be have to wait until the study is finalized, which according to Fitsimmons should happen in the next 2 months.
