Sina wins third America East Rookie of the Week Award

VESTAL, N.Y. -- For the second week in a row, freshman point guard Jasmine Sina has been named the America East Rookie of the Week. It also marks the third time this season that she has earned the conference's weekly accolade.

Sina finished with 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals in the Bearcats' 65-64 win over UMass Lowell on Saturday in its America East Conference opener. She drained a pair of three-point field goals and converted on seven of her nine free throws attempts. Her biggest shots of the game came during the Bearcats' rally from 11 points down in the second half. She was fouled beyond the three-point arc but made all three of her attempts from the free throw line.

For the season, Sina ranks sixth in the America East with 15.2 points per game and has reached double figures in scoring a team-best seven consecutive games. She has recorded a pair of games with at least 20 or more points during that stretch. Furthermore, Sina continues to lead the conference and is ranked No. 13 in the nation with 3.14 three-point field goals per game.

Sina joins fellow rookie guard Imani Watkins as two of only four players in program history to earn America East Rookie of the Week honors at least three times. Watkins was the pick back on Nov. 17, Nov. 24 as well as Dec. 21.

Jasbriell Swain was selected five times during the 2010-11 season while Andrea Holmes was chosen four times in 2008-09. Both Holmes and Swain went on to be named the America East Rookie of the Year.

In addition, Watkins and Sina remain on track to have two of the highest scoring averages by a freshman in program history. Watkins currently is averaging 16.3 points per game, which ranks fourth in the America East.

Alicia Brennan finished the 1986-87 campaign with 16.0 points per game, Bess Greenberg averaged 13.4 points in 1997-98 while current Bearcat assistant coach Leah Truncale had 13.3 points per game the following year. Since Binghamton moved up to the NCAA Division I level in 2001, Jen Blues averaged 11.3 ppg in 2002-03 while Holmes finished with 10.0 points per game in 2008-09.

Binghamton heads to Hartford on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.

NOTE: As a team, the Bearcats have now posted the America East Rookie of the Week in six out of the eight weeks so far this season … Sina was also named the America East Rookie of the Week on Dec. 1.
