Binghamton Men's Hoops falls to UMass-Lowell 50-40

LOWELL, Mass. – Host UMass Lowell (7-6, 1-0 AE) ended the game with a decisive 10-2 run and eased past Binghamton men's basketball (1-15, 0-1 AE) 50-40 in the America East opener for both teams Friday night at the Costello Athletic Center.

The Bearcats were within two, 40-38, after freshman wing Justin McFadden sank a pair of free throws with 3:42 left. But BU's freshman-laden lineup – the youngest in the nation – turned the ball over on four straight possessions and the River Hawks took advantage, converting 7-of-8 free throws in the final 1:39 to ice the win.

Binghamton was led by freshman guard Romello Walker, who recorded a season-high 14 points (10 in second half). Walker added four steals and had two thunderous second-half jams. Freshman center Dusan Perovic added nine points and five rebounds.

"We showed up ready to play and played hard tonight … we just didn't find enough offense," head coach Tommy Dempsey said. "We worked our tails off on defense but we had too many empty possessions in the second half and obviously turned the ball over too much. We played young tonight but we'll get better as we grow from these experiences."

The Bearcats opened the game with a spark as six different players tallied points during an initial 12-2 run. Lowell misfired on its first nine three-point attempts and Binghamton forced 11 turnovers with tenacious defense in the first 12 minutes. Both teams struggled to score midway through the half and the River Hawks evened the score by hitting two threes in a row before Perovic drilled a three to give BU a 23-20 lead at intermission. Perovic tallied seven points in the first half in his return to the lineup after missing a game with an injury. Junior guard Karon Waller added four points and five boards in 10 minutes of work.

The Bearcats next play at Hartford on Wednesday before returning home to host Maine on Jan. 10.
