When school is out, a number of children lose important meals offered by the schools. That's why a Charlottesville church is once again stepping in and providing free lunch to kids this summer.

The First Baptist Church, located on West Main Street in Charlottesville,is gearing up for the third year of its summer lunch program, called the Kids cafe.  The pastor, Hodari Hamilton, said about 40 percent of children in the area have free or reduced lunch, so there's an obvious need for food programs when school is out. This year volunteers will be serving meals in the social hall of the church from noon to 1 p.m.

The Kids Cafe is for elementary-aged children, but no one will be turned away. The church will even arrange to pick kids up if needed.

"They come, they have lunch, they're engaged with high school students and adults that just interact with them and just feed them a wonderful lunch," Pastor Hamilton said.

About 30 children will get free lunch each day through the program, and it's served thousands of children over the years.

The First Baptist Church free lunch program starts June 10 and goes through August 16. There's no need to sign up, children can just show up. For more information you can call the church at (434) 979-0952.
