Benton-To protect and serve. That is the motto for the police and this week the Benton Police Department welcomed two new officers to the force. Today wrapped up their training before they are assigned to other officers to work the streets. Part of the training is getting tased.
Officer Heath Ward and Officer Derek Buck were both tased for two seconds, with 50 thousand volts. Officer Heath Ward is first. He describes what he felt. My "body locked up, couldn't move. You're pretty much helpless and painful." Officer Ward admits the anticipation leading up was worse than the actual tase. But knowing this is all part of the job. "I've always wanted to be a police officer. What they do is very, very important and I can't see myself doing anything else."
Officer Derek Buck also agreed to the two second tase. "I felt it mostly in my lower legs and upper back but it made me stand up on my calves. I couldn't really control it. It was a really strange feeling."
Officer Quinton Jackson says thanks to a grant, all Benton police officers carry tasers. Each gun comes with a video camera to record the cops every move. "We have audio and video so as soon as we turn it on you're being recorded. We get to see what the suspect is doing. That way the officer is being covered and protected as well as the public."
