Empty missile shipping boxes found floating in water near Craig

Published: Updated:

Two shipping containers for guided missiles were found floating in the water near Craig Sunday, according to an Alaska State Trooper dispatch.

Clinton Cook, an employee with a Craig gas company, said he and his crew were heading to a remote job when they spotted what at first appeared to be a piece of fishing equipment. As they got closer, they were able to see it was a large box, roughly 8 feet long, according to Cook. They pulled up alongside it and Cook said he reached out to investigate.

“I noticed a date plate on it, so I just grabbed ahold of it, and I leaned over the edge of the boat and I was trying to read it and it said something to the effect of ‘guided missile,'” he said, adding he could also see a contractor identifier and a federal aviation number. “We were like, ‘Holy crap, we need to not mess with this thing anymore.'”

Cook said they took some photos and left it in the water, alerting troopers of its location around 11:30 a.m.

Aboard the P/V Interceptor, a 27-foot patrol vessel, troopers were able to relocate the box, which was a military shipping container. The Explosives Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team determined it was empty.

A second container was located and reported by another mariner in the area. EOD was able to confirm it was also empty, troopers said.

Cook said the container did not appear to have been in the water for very long, noting it wasn’t very dirty and there wasn’t any growth on it. He also said he and his crew did not see any other vessels in the area, which was about seven miles from Craig.

“The history of, or where the containers originated is unknown at this time,” troopers said. “Information contained on tags attached to the containers was passed along to military authorities.”

KTVA reached out to military officials at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, but has not received a response regarding the containers.
