Girdwood to vote on property taxes in April, not November

Published: Updated:

Girdwood residents will not have a special election in November after Alaska State Troopers committed to stay in their community for another six months.

They were supposed to pull their presence on Jan. 1, but now troopers will stay at their Girdwood post until July 1. That gives the community more time to decide what to do when they leave.

The Anchorage Assembly was considering an ordinance that would allow residents to increase their property taxes to pay for a police presence by special ballot in November.

It will now be part of the general election in April.
