Two Anchorage high schools could win $100,000 for promoting safe driving. Grace Christian School and East High School were both selected as finalists in State Farm’s “Celebrate My Driving” contest.
The theme is “2 eyes on the road, 2 hands on the wheel.” All the schools had to do was create a short 25 second video, but to win the cash, the schools need your votes.
East High School’s video focuses on athletics and shows off the diversity and culture of the school. The tag line is “stay on top of your game by driving safely.”
“I was watching a Gatorade commercial and it was really sportsy and I liked how they moved from one athlete to another. I thought maybe as students we can pass on our knowledge,” said East High junior Samuel Change.
Grace Christian School’s video has a similar feel. It shows how some activities require hands, some require eyes, but driving requires both.
State Farm will be selecting 22 high schools that gain the most votes by Friday to receive the grant money.
But students say what’s more important is the message the contest is driving home.
“I hope people take away that high schoolers do realize that texting and driving and being distracted at all is not a good thing and people do want to be responsible,” said Grace Christian junior Allie Jarvis.
“I find myself sometimes accidentally veering away from focusing on what I’m doing when I should be driving. I think it’s really important to enforce driving safely and always focusing on driving,” said East High junior Eli Neslund.
If either of the schools win the contest, there are guidelines to what the grant money can be spent the money on. Twenty-two percent must go towards a teen driver safety program.
