Open on Thanksgiving: Workers say it’s about more than a bolstered paycheck

Published: Updated:

Most people would argue the biggest perk of working on a holiday is the extra pay. But at Kaladi Brothers Coffee on Northern Lights Boulevard, the staff said there are other benefits to working on Thanksgiving.

“We didn’t have as many customers as we typically have, but they were very grateful that I was here,” said barista Maggie Merz.

She said there’s a special camaraderie among the crew working the holiday, even if there are fewer people behind the counter than usual.

“It makes it a lot easier than working by yourself,” Merz said.

Kaladi’s hours were shorter than normal. Merz said there were people waiting when she arrived at 7:30 a.m., many of whom she knows personally.

“You really get to know your customers. Not only do you memorize their drink, but also know what’s going on in their personal life,” Merz said. “It’s kind of like being a barber.”

This was Merz’s first time on the Thanksgiving shift. She said it’s rewarding to provide a product when most other places are closed.

“It’s enjoyable having people come in here a little tired and they’re really excited to see you because you’re giving them their coffee,” Merz said.

Midday Thursday, most of the tables at the coffee shop were occupied.

“It’s a great environment … It’s not always slam-packed. And the Internet’s good. That’s big for me,” said Dwayne Parton, a web developer who does most of this work from Kaladi.

He said it’s become a sort of home since he moved to Alaska in September. He was glad Kaladi decided to keep the gears of society moving instead of closing for the holiday.

“I’m very grateful. Home’s a long way from here,” Parton said.
