More parking spaces planned for Campbell Park

Published: Updated:

A park in Midtown Anchorage is getting some upgrades to help make it safer and more inviting to the neighborhood.

On Monday, crews demolished the old Fire Station 4 building to make room for up to 30 new parking spaces at the Campbell Park.

The building was being used by the Anchorage Parks and Recreation Department for storage and greenhouse support but was no longer needed.

The new parking spaces are the first phase of a two-year project to improve Campbell Park, including its trails.

“In the summer occasionally, it’s really packed on the weekend, this is a great place to have parties because it’s so nice in the summer with the river. Sometimes it gets packed and you have a hard time parking,” said Kat Souser, a park user.

The new parking spaces are expected to be finished by the summer of 2016.
