Published: Updated:

ANCHORAGE — It’s a new year, and already more than 50 crashes have been reported in Anchorage, according to police. The Anchorage Police Department issued a warning for drivers to proceed with caution Saturday, as many of Anchorage’s roads were slick with black ice.

On Jan. 1, APD responded to 34 crashes without injuries, and eight with at least one injured person, according to APD spokeswoman Renee Oistad. An additional 36 vehicles were reported as vehicles in distress (VIDs) and needed assistance.

As of noon Saturday, nine crashes have been reported, including one with injuries. Oistad said APD responded to 17 VID reports as well.

Oistad noted none of the crashes were alcohol-related. Police arrested eight people for driving under the influence Friday, and another two before noon on Saturday, she said.
