Doctors see more injuries during icy conditions

Published: Updated:

Anchorage’s icy conditions are taking a toll on local residents. One orthopedic surgeon said he’s seeing a big increase in broken bones.

Dr. Greg Schweiger said the majority of injuries he sees are serious enough to require some sort of surgery. He’s had to repair everything from broken wrists to broken hips.

Schweiger said while elderly people are injured more easily, he’s also treated plenty of young people who aren’t taking precautions on the ice.

He said proper footwear can go a long way. Ice grippers or anything that can provide more traction in icy conditions are important. Schweiger said using ice melt on driveways and sidewalks can also help people stay injury free.
