A new pizza place is moving into Spenard. Hearth will open right next door to Middle Way Café.

“I think it’s a wonderful neighborhood to be in. I think the mall is really central to this neighborhood, to Spenard and midtown. The location has worked well for Middleway over the years,” said Jon Campabello, owner of both restaurants.

Its concept is artisan, wood-fired pizzas with unique ingredients like beet pesto and pickled grapes.

Campabello said the goal is to make food that’s not only good, but good for you.

“To have a healthy, thriving community means we need to have healthy people in it and what we do every day is eat and drink,” he said.

Neighboring shops can’t wait for the restaurant to open. Grassroots moved into the Northern Lights Center seven years ago. Owner Jill Dean said it’s nice to see another like-minded business continue the Spenard Renaissance.

“We can look within a five or six block radius and see a lot of small business who are running their businesses in a sustainably, organically important manner. It’s a really exciting development in Spenard,” Dean said.

Operations manager and head chef Jason Davis perfected his pizza-making skills at restaurants around Anchorage, like Moose’s Tooth. He’s excited to bring his flavors to the neighborhood.

“We just want to continue to be a part of that community. And have a really nice place where people can come together and share some pizza and a great beer.”

Hearth opens January 23 with hours from 5pm to 10pm.
