Bean’s Café takes its soup on the road

Published: Updated:

Bean’s Café needs your help with one of its biggest fundraisers and all you have to do is eat.

Community members will vote on their favorite soups that will be featured at the Empty Bowl Project in March.

Bean’s Café kitchen supervisor Aaron Dollison cooked up a lot of soup for the first day of the Soup Road Show.

“About a hundred gallons,” he laughed.

Bean’s narrowed down all its recipe entries to two meat—Turkey Bean and Italian Sweet Sausage — and two vegetarian—Jumpin’ Black Eyed Pea & Kale and Healthy Harvest Corn & Bean Medley.

“People keep asking me which one is the best,” Dollision said. “I try them all because I make it so I have to taste them.”

The favorite from each category will be sold at the Empty Bowl Project in March then made into soup mixes for people to buy.

“It’s really important to get all the votes from the community and have that support. It’s a way to encourage the community to come and learn a little about Bean’s,” said outreach officer Melissa Webber.

Providence Alaska Medical Center staff members were happy to lend their taste buds to help out.

“I like the Sweet Italian Sausage because it’s more hearty, more beans and a little bit more flavor to it,” said Robin Tyson.

For Meaghan Cerri, the Turkey Bean was the one to beat.

“I scarfed that one down very fast,” Cerri said. “It was very, very good.”

The Soup Road Show will head to the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company on Thursday, Jan. 28, and Side Street Espresso on Friday, Jan. 29. Staff will serve soup from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Empty Bowl Project takes place Saturday, March 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dena’ina Center.
