Anchorage volunteers ‘Paint the Town’ for neighbors in need

Published: Updated:

What does it mean to be a good neighbor? A group of Alaskans spent Saturday brushing up on the concept.

“We’ve got about 20 people out here that are donating their Saturday to paint this house,” volunteer Bruce Erickson said.

Paint the Town is an annual event run by the group Neighborworks Alaska. Toni Castillo’s house is the first of three homes the nonprofit will spruce up over the next week.

“When something like this happens, it is an awesome thing,” Castillo said. “It is unbelievable, because, without this help I could not have done it at all.”

All of the supplies needed are donated and all the labor comes from volunteers.

Toni is normally on the giving end of these kinds of projects. She’s a street pastor and spends every Saturday making 60 quarts of soup and delivering it to the homeless.

“She’s the last person on her list,” Jim MacKenzie with Neighborworks Alaska said. “So, we like to take an opportunity to put her first.”

Neighborworks believes neighborhoods are the foundations of our community, and Paint the Town is a great example of what can happen when neighbors roll up their sleeves and help each other.

“I see these people and the smiles on their faces,” Castillo said. “I hear them laughing and it just kind of puts you at rest.”

Most of the volunteers on Saturday are members of local rotary clubs.

Neighborworks has a full line of projects this next week — including painting two more homes, landscape work at Willawaw Elementary and planting flower beds for the City of Wasilla.
