Rockland nightclub murderer smiles ahead of sentence

Published: Updated:

Before being sentenced for murder, Carlos Herring walked into the Rockland County Courthouse with a grin on his face and that prompted an outburst from the victim?s family.

The judge called Herring ?a parent?s worst nightmare? before sentencing him to 32 years to life for the murder of Don Thompson Jr. Herring shot Thompson six times outside Spring Valley?s Club Horizen in August. He then fled to Florida and was brought back by police for a trial.

Tawanna White has a 7-year-old son with the victim. White screamed and cursed at Herring for smiling before she was thrown out of the courtroom. The assistant district attorney spoke of Herring?s blatant lack of remorse in court.

?We've done the most that we could in the confines of the criminal justice system,? Rockland District Attorney Michael Bongiorno said. ?I think the family is happy with the results under the circumstances and hopefully this will help in the healing process for the family.?
