YREKA, Calif. -- The city of Yreka is asking its voters to decide whether or not to approve a sales tax to provide extra funds for the general fund.

Measure C proposes a one half of one percent sales tax for the city. If approved it would increase the sales tax from 7.25 percent to 7.75 percent.

On a 100 dollar purchase, the new tax would add up to 50 cents.

The city says if it is approved, the money would go to a few things around the city that have been struggling with funding.

The money would go to help increase police response, repair and maintain city streets, and upgrade and improve city utilities.

People against the measure say it would make yreka less competitive with sales-tax free Oregon.
