Binghamton's West Middle School is celebrating the year of the goat with a Chinese New Year gala.

The event featured speeches by students in Chinese, professional performers from BU's Chinese opera, arts and crafts, and food.

Students in the Chinese program say the event gives them the change to enjoy music, art and exposure to the different aspects of Chinese culture.

Gabriel Sabatino, 7th Grade Student at West Middle said, "It's just cool how these cultures can blend and coexist together. It's also good for the students because it shows a variety of people the culture."

Robert Terboss, 7th Grade Student at West Middle said, "I like the language that they speak and the different foods they eat and how they spend time with their family and the celebrations they celebrate."

The celebration was sponsored by the Binghamton City School District, the Southern Tier Chinese Cultural Association and Binghamton University.
