Binghamton Softball splits in final day of George Southern Classic

STATESBORO, Ga. – Freshman infielder Kate Richard drove in five runs and freshman pitcher Sarah Miller pitched a complete-game victory, leading Binghamton (2-3) to a split in the final day of the Georgia Southern Eagle Classic on Sunday. The Bearcats lost a 13-11, eight-inning slugfest to Boston College in the opener but bounced back to beat Tennessee Tech 6-2 in the finale.
Richards, who is tied for the team lead with a .471 batting average, went 5-for-7 in the two games on Sunday. She scored twice and belted a double.
One day after her walk-off grand slam against Campbell, Miller earned her first collegiate win against the Golden Eagles. She scattered two runs on seven hits and struck out three batters.
Binghamton's other key hitters on Sunday were freshman outfielder Jessica Rutherford, who was 4-for-7, homered and scored four times, and junior infielder Griffin McIver, who was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.
In the opener against Boston College, the Bearcats were unable to hold on to an 11-10 lead in the top of the seventh inning. The Eagles tied the game on a wild pitch and plated two more runs in the top of the eighth inning.
Richard drove in a game-high four runs in the opener while junior designated hitter Taylor Chaffee clubbed a two-run homer.
Rutherford and Richard each had three hits in the win against Tennessee Tech. Rutherford, who scored three times, hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning.
Binghamton heads to the Arizona State Tournament Feb. 27-March 1.
