"Canstruction" Project Back To Help Fight Hunger in Southern Tier

Published:
An organization is collaborating with the community to showcase their creative side all for a good cause.

The Broome County Leadership Institute Alumni Association is returning with "Canstruction" for the second year. The Canstruction is geared toward deminishing hunger in the southern tier. Teams collect canned goods and construct different objects and later the cans are donated to CHOW and the
Food Bank of the Southern Tier.

Often food hunger issues that go on in our community are hidden. People don't talk about it and so it's a fundraiser to raise awareness, companies get recognition our in the community and it's team building all at the same time," said Susan Christensen, Broome Leadership Institute Board Member.

"Seeing kids in my own district in my own community that are in need really hurts me because I can go home and have cabinets full of food and they can't. It's very important that they can get the food that they need," said Alexis Green, Student.

Last year's event brought in more than 2100 pounds of food. The canned creations will be on display at the Oakdale Mall in April.
