BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sydney Smith finished with 21 points, leading Vermont (4-19, 1-10 AE) to a 72-66 win over Binghamton (4-20, 2-9 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at Patrick Gym.

Smith was one of three Catamount players to reach double figures in scoring. Kayla Burchill scored 15 points while Katie Lavelle added 10 points. Niki Taylor, meanwhile, grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

The loss overshadowed a pair of standout performances for the Bearcats. Freshman point guard Jasmine Sina led all scorers with 22 points. It marks the fifth time this season she has scored at least 20 points. Senior forward Sherae Swinson finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds to record her sixth career double-double.

Vermont jumped out to a 20-9 lead on a layup by Lavelle with 8:45 left in the first half. The Bearcats, however, rallied to within 36-34 at the half. Sina capped the comeback by swishing a three-point field goal with two seconds left to go.

The Bearcats finally tied the game at 45-45 with 14:46 left in regulation on a layup by freshman guard Imani Watkins. She would finish with 12 points for the game.

Smith took over the game during a 13-0 Vermont run in a span of exactly three minutes to make the score 65-51 with 6:38 remaining. She sank three three-point field goals in the process.

Binghamton kept battling and pulled to within 69-64 on a pair of free throws by junior guard Kim Albrecht with 1:15 left to go. Vermont, however, scored on their next two possessions to put the game out of reach.

Vermont finished with a 43-31 advantage in rebounding, with 15 of them coming at the offensive end. The Catamounts also had 43 of their points scored by players off the bench.

Up next for Binghamton is a noon game on Wednesday at defending America East champion Albany.
