Mayor Announces Chosen Firm for LED Light Project in Binghamton

The City of Binghamton has selected a company to convert 7,000 street lights to LED bulbs, but City Council must approve the project before it can get underway.

The $4 million project will go to Johnson Controls out of Syracuse. The city expects energy savings to offset the cost of the project. Tonight at a work session the council raised questions about a couple of items--including the pole agreement with NYSEG. If the deal is approved Johnson Controls will begin installation in the late spring with the entire project scheduled to be complete by early 2016.

Johnson Controls is also exploring LED technology for the city's parking garages and bridges. Mayor Rich David says he remained budget conscious when choosing a firm to complete the project.

"This is a company we feel could advance this project but could also work within the budget. What's very important is that the savings from converting to LED technology will pay for the cost of the project," said Mayor Rich David.

"It will help as far as safety security goes. It's a brighter lights, couple times brighter that other street lights that we have today. It'll definitely give a better light and feeling to the city," Councilman Joseph Mihalko.

At the next City Council work session the company and the Department of Public Works will seek authorization to move forward with the project.
