New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to be Replaced

Published:
State lawmakers announced Sheldon Silver will be replaced as New York State Assembly Speaker.

After meeting behind closed doors for two days Assembly lawmakers said
there will be a vacancy for the office of the speaker beginning on Monday.

Assemblywoman Donna Lupardo told Fox 40 News that they will vote to remove Silver from office on Monday unless he resigns between now and that time.
She says Majority Leader Joe Morelli will be the acting speaker beginning on Monday or sooner if Silver resigns before that.

She says Assembly lawmakers will vote for a new speaker on February 10th.
This will give those who are interested in the position a chance to express their interest.

Silver has said he will not hinder the process. The 70 year is facing federal charges that he took nearly 4 million dollars in payoffs and
kickbacks. He insists that he's innocent.
