United Way Collects Supplies for Local Veterans

Published:
The United Way of Broome County is asking for the community's help to gather supplies for local veterans.

The supply drive, which started November 12, is geared toward collecting cold weather and hygiene items like hats, scarves toothpaste and razors.

However Southern Tier Veteran's Support Group members say their number one need is gas and grocery store gift cards.

So far the United Way has collected between five and six bins full of items.

Community and Impact Engagement Manager Joni Kaiser said, "I think veterans are in a position where they're trying to give back to the community and fit back in and its been difficult for them especially if they've been on active duty. Sometimes America is good about responding to its veterans and sometimes not so good. I think it's always an awareness thing."

Drop off locations include Miller Auto Team, New York Veteran's Services Office, BU campus and the United Way.

Items will be collected Friday and distributed to veterans in the area.
