Vestal Town Supervisor John Schaffer has announced he will run for a second term.

Schaffer served six years on the Vestal Town Board before becoming Supervisor. Schaffer says mandates from the state and the county's slow return of sales tax revenue to municipalities is challenging. But if re-elected he would focus on improving infrastructure and controlling taxes.

He points to the re-paving of the Vestal Parkway from the Tioga County line to the Binghamton border as a major accomplishment of his first term.

"My big goals, to keep the communication open to all people, keep working hard on the infrastructure, keep our taxes low. And I want to keep our services. I don't believe in laying people off," said Schaffer.

Schaffer will run against Republican Bill Kelley in November. Kelley is a small business owner and former State Department contractor.
