JC Post Office Celebrates 80th Birthday

Published:
The Johnson City Post Office celebrated its 80th anniversary Wednesday.

The ceremony featured a color guard along with village politicians who talked about the rich history that the building has. Murals in the lobby were painted in 1937 by artist Frederic Knight as part of the Treasury Relief Art Project, a New Deal program. The 13,500 square foot building cost just $43,000 to build in 1935. The cost of a stamp that year? Three cents.

"I congratulate the post office on 80 years of the dedication of this building, like I said its an important part of the village and its an important part of history," said Mayor of Johnson City, Greg Deemie.

The Johnson City Post Office building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
