Tough shooting night for Bearcats results in loss to Albany

VESTAL, N.Y. – Shereesha Richards finished with 24 points and 14 rebounds, leading Albany (11-6, 4-0 AE) to a 82-49 win over Binghamton (4-13, 2-2 AE) in an America East women's basketball game on Wednesday night at the Events Center. The Great Danes are the three-time defending America East champions.

Richards, who is the reigning America East Player of the Year, led four Albany players who scored in double figures. Sarah Royals had 16 points and a game-high eight assists, Imani Tate added 14 points while Zakiya Saunders chipped in 10 points.

The Great Danes shot 51 percent for the game (34-of-67), including a blistering 63 percent over the final 20 minutes (20-of-32). They also outrebounded the Bearcats 47-25, which included 17 offensive rebounds.

"We played a very good, well-coached team today and they executed very well," Binghamton head coach Linda Cimino said. "At the end of the day, they were stronger on the boards and played very hard."

Binghamton started of the game on a good note as a basket by freshman Imani Watkins tied the game at 11-11 with 13:12 left in the first half. The Bearcats were within 24-20 with 4:21 left in regulation but Albany closed the half on a 9-4 run to go up 33-24 at the break.

Albany blew the game open in the first 6:12 of the second half, going up 50-32. Richards led a balanced attack with six points during that stretch while Royals added five points.

Binghamton got to within 52-39 on a pair of free throws by junior guard Kim Albrecht with 11:53 left in regulation. From there, however, the Great Danes went on a 15-5 run to go up 67-44 with 5:41 remaining. Richards and Saunders each netted six points during that span.

Freshman point guard Jasmine Sina led the Bearcats with 12 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. She came into the game ranked No. 12 in the nation with 3.0 three-point field goals per game and proceeded to make three of her attempts from beyond the arc.

Watkins reached double figures in scoring for the fourth game in a row, finishing with 11 points and three assists. Senior forward Sherae Swinson, meanwhile, added 10 points, six rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal.

Up next for Binghamton is a Saturday game at New Hampshire. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
