CHIPPEWA FALLS (WKOW) -- Hackers steal nearly $150,000 after breaking into a school district in western Wisconsin.
The La Crosse Tribune says the hackers targeted the Stanley-Boyd School District in Chippewa County. The superintendent says they accessed direct deposit files from a recent payroll. The district's liability insurance will cover the loss.
Anchor Bank handles the school district's payroll services. An Anchor Bank spokeswoman says the bank is helping district employees close out their accounts and open new accounts in case their information was compromised. She says no other Anchor Bank customers were affected.
The district is working with bank officials to improve the payroll system's security. The FBI is handling the investigation.
