The Green Bay City Council voted Tuesday night to hold a new public hearing on a proposed gasification plant that planners say would turn trash into electricity.

Oneida Seven Generations Corporation is planning to build the plant near the end of Atkinson Drive close to I-43, on Green Bay's northwest side.

The plant was originally proposed in Ashwaubenon, until citizens objected.

Planners say it would heat household waste in a way that does not incinerate the trash, but reduces it to a fraction of its original size. The waste would be used as a source of renewable energy.
